Our Security Philosophy

Security isn't a feature at eLegacy—it is a responsibility.

Families trust us with some of the most personal and important information they own. That trust influences every decision we make, from how information is stored to how it is shared and who is allowed to access it.

Every feature within eLegacy is designed with a single goal in mind: helping protect your information while ensuring the people you authorize can access what they need when the time is right.

Rather than treating security as something added after development, we designed it as a core part of the platform from the very beginning. Identity management, document storage, estate roles, secure sharing, beneficiary access, and account permissions all work together to help safeguard your information throughout your estate planning journey.

Whether you're organizing your estate today or preparing your family for tomorrow, our commitment remains the same:

Protect your information. Respect your privacy. Give you control.

Good to Know

Security is not limited to one feature within eLegacy. It is built into every major workflow—from creating your estate plan to securely sharing information with the people you trust.

Protecting Your Information

When you store information in eLegacy, protecting it becomes one of our highest priorities.

From the moment information is transmitted to the platform until it is securely stored, multiple layers of protection work together to help safeguard your estate information.

These protections include secure communication between your device and our platform, encrypted storage of your information, authenticated user access, and carefully controlled permissions that determine who can view or manage specific information.

Just as important, eLegacy is designed so that you remain in control. You decide who can access your information, when they can access it, and what they are allowed to see. Access is never granted automatically—it is based on the permissions and relationships you establish within your estate plan.

While no online service can promise absolute security, we continuously strive to follow modern security practices and design our platform to help protect your information throughout its lifecycle.

The platform is designed to securely organize many types of important estate information, including:

  • Personal identity information
  • Government-issued identity documents
  • Legal documents
  • Financial account information
  • Insurance policies
  • Property and asset records
  • Digital asset information
  • Estate contacts and professional advisors
  • Beneficiary information
  • Estate planning instructions

Privacy Tip

One of the best ways to protect your family is to keep your estate information organized before it is needed. Updating your information regularly helps ensure the people you've chosen can access accurate, current information when the time comes.

How Access Is Controlled

At eLegacy, protecting your information isn't just about securing data—it's about ensuring the right people have access to the right information at the right time.

Every estate is unique. Some people need access immediately, while others should only receive information after specific events or with your explicit authorization. That's why eLegacy is built around a role-based access model rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

As you build your estate, you decide who serves in important roles such as Grantor, Co-Grantor, Executor, Co-Executor, Trustee, Power of Attorney, Healthcare Agent, Guardian, Beneficiary, and trusted professional advisors. Each role supports different responsibilities within your estate plan and helps organize how information is managed throughout the platform.

Additional features—including Trusted Access, Emergency Access, Secure Sharing, and the Beneficiary Portal—provide controlled ways to share information when appropriate while helping prevent unnecessary or unintended access.

You remain in control of these permissions and may review or update them as your estate plan evolves.

Throughout eLegacy, access is guided by the choices you make—not by assumptions.

Examples include:

  • Assigning estate roles to trusted individuals
  • Sharing selected documents with specific people
  • Granting temporary or limited access when appropriate
  • Inviting beneficiaries to their secure portal
  • Designating trusted contacts for emergency situations
  • Updating permissions whenever your estate plan changes

Did You Know?

Many estate planning platforms focus primarily on document creation. eLegacy goes a step further by helping you organize, manage, and control access to the information surrounding those documents throughout your estate planning journey.

Identity Vault

Your identity is the foundation of your estate plan. That's why eLegacy includes a dedicated Identity Vault designed to securely organize the documents that establish and verify who you are.

Rather than scattering important records across filing cabinets, safes, or multiple online accounts, the Identity Vault provides a centralized location for storing government-issued identity documents and other essential personal records tied to your estate.

Identity documents are often among the first items needed during major life events, estate administration, and identity verification. Having them securely organized can help reduce unnecessary delays and make it easier for the people you've authorized to locate critical information when it matters most.

For joint estates, each Grantor maintains an independent Identity Vault. This allows both individuals to securely manage their own identity documents while keeping records clearly organized and associated with the correct person.

Documents You Can Organize

The Identity Vault is designed to securely organize records such as:

  • Social Security cards
  • Driver’s licenses
  • Passports
  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage certificates (when applicable)
  • Military discharge records (DD-214)
  • Medicare cards (when applicable)
  • Medicaid cards (when applicable)
  • Other government-issued identity documents

Some document types may not apply to every individual. eLegacy allows you to indicate when a document is Not Applicable, ensuring your Identity Vault and readiness indicators accurately reflect your personal circumstances.

Good to Know

The Identity Vault is designed specifically for personal identity documents. Financial records, legal documents, insurance policies, passwords, and other estate information are organized in their own dedicated areas throughout the platform.

Secure Vault

While the Identity Vault focuses on proving who you are, the Secure Vault is designed to help organize the important information that supports your entire estate.

Rather than storing everything in one place, eLegacy organizes sensitive information into dedicated categories so it remains easy to locate, manage, and maintain throughout your lifetime.

The Secure Vault acts as a central gateway to these categories, helping you monitor the completeness of your estate while keeping related information organized in the areas where it naturally belongs.

Whether you're reviewing financial accounts, insurance policies, legal documents, digital accounts, or key contacts, the Secure Vault provides a convenient overview of your estate's most important information without duplicating or moving your records.

Information Available Through the Secure Vault

The Secure Vault provides quick access to important areas of your estate, including:

  • Digital accounts and passwords
  • Financial accounts
  • Insurance policies
  • Legal documents
  • Key contacts
  • Security status
  • Recent activity
  • Secure sharing tools
  • Emergency Access
  • Security Audit

Each area continues to manage its own records while the Secure Vault provides a single location for monitoring the overall security and organization of your estate.

Privacy Tip

A well-organized estate is easier to maintain than one assembled at the last minute. Periodically reviewing your Secure Vault helps ensure important information remains complete, accurate, and available when it's needed.

Beneficiary Portal Security

The Beneficiary Portal is designed to provide a secure, controlled way for beneficiaries to access information that has been intentionally shared with them.

Unlike traditional document sharing, beneficiaries do not automatically receive unrestricted access to your estate. Instead, access is managed through a staged process that helps ensure information is only made available when appropriate and according to your wishes.

Every invitation is tied to a specific beneficiary and requires identity verification before access can be established. Depending on your estate plan and the stage of access you've authorized, beneficiaries may receive limited information during your lifetime or additional information when specific release conditions have been satisfied.

This approach helps balance two important goals: making information available when it is genuinely needed while continuing to protect information that should remain private.

How Beneficiary Access Works

The Beneficiary Portal follows a controlled access lifecycle designed to protect both your privacy and your intentions. The general process includes:

Invitation
Identity Verification
Secure Account
Authorized Access
Additional Release (when applicable)
Beneficiary Portal

Every stage is designed to ensure beneficiaries receive only the information intended for them.

Did You Know?

The Beneficiary Portal is separate from Secure Share Links. Secure Share Links are designed for temporary sharing of specific information, while the Beneficiary Portal provides an ongoing, authenticated experience for beneficiaries you’ve chosen as part of your estate plan.

Secure Sharing

There are times when important estate information needs to be shared with trusted family members, professional advisors, or other individuals involved in your estate plan.

eLegacy's Secure Sharing tools are designed to make that process both simple and controlled.

Rather than giving someone unrestricted access to your estate, you can choose exactly what information to share and with whom. This helps ensure sensitive information is only available to the people you intend.

Whether you're sharing legal documents with an attorney, financial information with a trusted advisor, or selected records with family members, Secure Sharing helps you remain in control throughout the process.

Secure Sharing Principles

Every sharing experience within eLegacy is designed around a few simple principles:

  • You choose what is shared.
  • You choose who receives access.
  • Access can be reviewed and managed over time.
  • Different sharing methods support different situations.
  • Sensitive information remains protected until you intentionally share it.

These principles help balance convenience with privacy while supporting the needs of your estate plan.
